What is Fibroadenoma Breast?
Fibroadenoma is the most common benign tumor of the female breast. Being means it is non-cancerous.
This tumor is composed of a mix of fibrous and glandular tissues. It can occur at any age but is most seen in women aged 15 to 35 years.
Types of Fibroadenoma Breast
- Hard Fibroadenoma
- Common in younger women.
- Grows slowly and remains small.
- Soft Fibroadenoma
- Found more often in older women.
- Grows rapidly and becomes larger.
Causes of Fibroadenoma Breast
- Hormonal Imbalance: Excess estrogen can stimulate fibroadenoma growth.
- Oral Contraceptive Pills (OCPs): Prolonged use of OCPs increases the risk.
- Injury to the Breast: Trauma to the breast can also trigger fibroadenoma, a pattern I’ve observed in my clinical practice since 1997.
Symptoms of Fibroadenoma Breast
- Solid, well-defined lumps: These are round and have smooth borders.
- Slow growth.
- Often found in the lower part of the breast.
- Movable lumps: These can be easily moved under the skin and are referred to as breast mice.
- Firm texture: The lumps feel rubbery to the touch.
- Pain: Typically painless, though slight discomfort may occur in some cases.
- Multiple fibroadenomas: Some women may have more than one lump.
Diagnosis of Fibroadenoma Breast
- Your doctor will examine both breasts for lumps.
- Since smaller fibroadenomas might be undetectable during a physical exam, a breast ultrasound is recommended for a more thorough evaluation.
