Sinusitis is an infection and inflammation of the sinuses.

What are Sinuses?

Sinuses are air-filled pockets in the bones of the face, also known as paranasal sinuses, as they surround the nasal cavity.

There are four pairs of sinuses:

    1. Frontal sinuses (above the eyes)
    2. Maxillary sinuses (cheek area)
    3. Ethmoid sinuses (between the eyes)
    4. Sphenoid sinuses (behind the eyes)

Functions of the Sinuses

  1. Warm, moisten, and filter the air we breathe.
  2. Lighten the skull due to their air-filled nature.
  3. Play a role in vocalizing certain sounds.

In my clinical practice since 2011, maxillary sinusitis is the most observed type of sinusitis.

Causes of Sinusitis

  1. Upper respiratory tract infections: Common cold, flu, and infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
  2. Allergic rhinitis and hay fever: Triggered by dust, smoke, and pollutants.
  3. Nasal polyps: Polyps and sinusitis can form a vicious cycle.
  4. Structural issues: Deviated nasal septum or tumors.
  5. Chronic tonsillitis and adenoids: These conditions increase the risk of sinusitis.
  6. Underlying conditions: Diabetes or HIV can predispose individuals to sinusitis.

Symptoms of Sinusitis

  1. Facial pain and headache: Pressure in the affected sinus areas.
  2. Postnasal drip: Irritation in the throat and hoarseness of voice.
  3. Nasal congestion: Difficulty in breathing.
  4. Thick nasal discharge: Yellowish or greenish in color.
  5. Fever
  6. Fatigue
  7. Offensive smell in the nose

Diagnosis of Sinusitis

  • Doctors may recommend an X-Ray PNS (Water’s View) or a CT scan for a detailed evaluation.
  • In many cases, the signs and symptoms alone are sufficient for diagnosis.

Complications of Sinusitis

  1. Chronic sinusitis: Can lead to nasal polyps, making treatment challenging.
  2. Eye complications: Infection spreading to the eye socket can cause vision problems.
  3. Serious infections: Sinusitis can lead to meningitis or infections in the bones.
