Sinusitis is an infection and inflammation of the sinuses.
What are Sinuses?
Sinuses are air-filled pockets in the bones of the face, also known as paranasal sinuses, as they surround the nasal cavity.
There are four pairs of sinuses:
-
- Frontal sinuses (above the eyes)
- Maxillary sinuses (cheek area)
- Ethmoid sinuses (between the eyes)
- Sphenoid sinuses (behind the eyes)
Functions of the Sinuses
- Warm, moisten, and filter the air we breathe.
- Lighten the skull due to their air-filled nature.
- Play a role in vocalizing certain sounds.
In my clinical practice since 2011, maxillary sinusitis is the most observed type of sinusitis.
Causes of Sinusitis
- Upper respiratory tract infections: Common cold, flu, and infections caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi.
- Allergic rhinitis and hay fever: Triggered by dust, smoke, and pollutants.
- Nasal polyps: Polyps and sinusitis can form a vicious cycle.
- Structural issues: Deviated nasal septum or tumors.
- Chronic tonsillitis and adenoids: These conditions increase the risk of sinusitis.
- Underlying conditions: Diabetes or HIV can predispose individuals to sinusitis.
Symptoms of Sinusitis
- Facial pain and headache: Pressure in the affected sinus areas.
- Postnasal drip: Irritation in the throat and hoarseness of voice.
- Nasal congestion: Difficulty in breathing.
- Thick nasal discharge: Yellowish or greenish in color.
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Offensive smell in the nose
Diagnosis of Sinusitis
- Doctors may recommend an X-Ray PNS (Water’s View) or a CT scan for a detailed evaluation.
- In many cases, the signs and symptoms alone are sufficient for diagnosis.
Complications of Sinusitis
- Chronic sinusitis: Can lead to nasal polyps, making treatment challenging.
- Eye complications: Infection spreading to the eye socket can cause vision problems.
- Serious infections: Sinusitis can lead to meningitis or infections in the bones.
